The Heart of Texas

When my high school band director, Brian Casey, approached me and asked me to write a piece for the State Farm Original Score Contest, I was admittedly reluctant. The requirements stated that the piece should portray something great about the state of Texas. I knew from the start I wanted to avoid anything cliché about Texas, and I especially wanted to avoid any country music. So, I took an expressive angle with a couple tips-of-the-hat to The Yellow Rose of Texas and the State Farm jingle. 

The Heart of Texas is dedicated to Brian Casey and the Brazoswood High School Symphonic Band.
