Two Concert Improvisations
Piano Trio (violin, violoncello, piano)
The first movement, Nature, is very spontaneous and depicts a wild, primitive form of life--perhaps a child. Indeed, the first theme is very improvisatory and rebellious. This theme evolves into a more mature form. The first and second form of the theme battle with each other throughout the movement--fitting of a battle between the primitive and the mature. A modulation at the coda signifies that in the journey from childhood to adolescence and beyond, we move away from our origins even as much of our nature is retained.
The second movement, Nostalgia, has a beautiful, jazzy feel. The cello at the beginning emulates a walking bass line accompaniment to the lyrical violin. Filled with extended jazz harmonies, this movement recalls back to childhood--exemplifying a longing for one's Pastoral origins. Ultimately, this movement provides the realization that the natural innocence of one's childhood is unreachable.
